What Is LGV CPC Training?

LGV CPC Training is the Certificate of Professional Competence course for drivers of large goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. The training includes theoretical learning combined with practical training to positively promote safer, fuel efficient driving, and care for your vehicle.

All LGV drivers must, under UK regulations, complete 35 hours of periodic CPC training every 5 years in order for their certification to remain valid. This course is designated by the Driver and vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), and is there to ensure that every driver operates under the governing professional and safety standards across the transport industry.

Who Requires LGV CPC Training?

If you drive large goods vehicles for hire or reward, you must complete LGV CPC training, whether you are a professional driver operating lorries, articulated lorries or heavy vehicles.

Even if you hold an HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) licence you will still need to complete the Driver CPC in order to work as a professional driver. If you are driving a vehicle under 3.5 tonnes for personal use, you will be largely exempt. Most driving roles in the world of commercial transport will need this qualification.

LGV CPC Prerequisites

You will need to meet the following conditions before starting your LGV CPC course:

  • Possess a current LGV or HGV driving licence.
  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Successfully pass the required theory and practical assessments if applying for training for the first time.

Once you have completed the initial CPC qualification, you will then need to renew it every five years by continuing your periodic training for a minimum of 35 hours.

LGV vs HGV – What is the Difference?

LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) and HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) are terms that are often used interchangeably, however they refer to different bands of commercial motor vehicles.

  • LGV: Generally refer to vehicles above 3.5 tonnes including lighter trucks and vans for local and regional delivery.
  • HGV: Generally refers to heavier vehicles over 7.5 tonnes usually used for long haul and large scale freight transport.

Both LGV and HGV vehicles require Driver CPC certification, but the training modules may differ slightly depending on the weight of the vehicle and the purpose for which it is used. If you are not sure which course is appropriate for your licence or requirements, most training centres will be able to help you decide.

Flexible LGV CPC Training Options

Drivers need flexible options nowadays, so LGV CPC courses are available online and in-class.

With LGV CPC online course options you can complete your course from home, or on the go. Of course, the classes are interactive, instructor-led and fully DVSA approved and of the same high standard as classroom based training.

There are also weekend and evening classes available, which is great for drivers working full-time to meet their driver CPC qualification.
